Barack Obama and Saul Alinsky: community organizing in the U.S. The seminar "Barack Obama and Saul Alinsky: community organizing in the U.S."was held on March 25th in Rome, at the Faculty Scienze delle Formazione of the Roma Tre University. Mattia Diletti, La Sapienza University of Rome, introduced the topic of community organizing as an instrument for the creation and defence of "community" interests. The seminar was organized as part of the course of Theories and practices of active citizenship held by Giovanni Moro and included the participation of representatives of public institutions, civil society organizations, academics and scholars interested in the issue.
The report of the second edition of the Civil Society Index is being published. The report of the second edition of the Civil Society Index project is being published on FONDACA's website. The project investigated the perceptions of the state of civil societies in different countries and has been coordinated at international level by the NGO CIVICUS - World for Alliance Participation - and has been implemented in Italy by Cittadinanzattiva with the scientific support of FONDACA. In particular, the aim was the gathering of information on the structure of civil society organizations, the external social, political, legal and economic context, the promotion and protection of values by citizens and the impact of civic organizations on Italian society.

The Other side of the coin. The single currency and European Citizenship - The report. The report of the seminar "The Other side of the coin. The single currency and European citizenship", that was held on October 11th 2010 at the Free University of Berlin, has been published on FONDACA's website. The seminar is part of the program that the Foundation is implementing on the issue of the single currency and its connection with the construction of European citizenship. Giovanni Moro, Thomas Risse and Vivien Schmidt introduced the theme of the seminar, which included the participation of Daniela Piana, Anna Hechinger, Arndt Sorge, Eva Heidbreder, Dario Castiglione, Christian Calliess, Arianna Montanari, Daniel Barbu and Michael Zuern. The report contains a summary of the main contents of the papers presented by the experts as well as the reported comments which emerged from the discussion which add extra value. Download the report
The impact of EU participation and information policies on local-based civic organizations in Italy - The results. The results of the research on the impact of the European Union participation and information policies, commissioned by the Representation of the European Commission in Italy and carried out in 2010 by FONDACA, are now available. The survey, conducted on a sample of 50 local organizations operating in Italy, aimed at producing information on the attitude of the latter towards the main new matters concerning participation introduced by the Lisbon Treaty and on their level of knowledge and involvement in the participative initiatives and in the information processes carried out at the Community level. In the final report, besides the main findings which have emerged from the research, some recommendations addressed to the EU institutions have been presented. To read the final report, click here
CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP
2009 outcomes on the path towards sustainability. In April, the Italian food company Barilla GeR Fratelli has published an update about its path towards sustainability. The document is the sum of the 2009 data regarding the indicators the company adopted in order to make its business responsibly and in a sustainable way. To facilitate the direct reading and making the comparison with the previous 2008 Report, the sustainability model has been maintained and consolidated, articulated in challenges, commitments and goals. In line with the previous reporting period, many activities have been carried on in order to reach the company 2014 goals. FONDACA has still supported the Group.
The new Thematic Working Groups of the Global Compact Network Italy. The Global Compact Network Italy has recently formed new Thematic Working Groups to facilitate the dialogue among the network's different subjects involved in the initiative: companies, SMEs, civil society organizations, foundations and academies. At the moment, there are three active Working Groups which centre on human rights, the environment and anti-corruption. Focused on specific aspects, the Working Groups aim to develop common projects, to share working instruments and to manage formative sections on the themes considered to be most interesting by the participants. The Groups are also structured into subgroups in order to go into depth on a wide range of topics linked to the skills and best practices of the companies and organizations involved.
For organizational reasons, the seminar "On the new frontiers of stakeholder engagement", organized by Barilla with the scientific support of FONDACA, has been postponed to Wednesday, June 22nd, from 9.00 a.m. to 13.30 p.m. The meeting, which will be held at the Swiss Centre in Via Palestro 2 in Milan, will be attended by representatives from academies, private companies and civil society with the aim of confronting both theoretical and operative aspects, helping to create new knowledge on the subject.
FONDACA is working on the new series of publications FONDACA Working Paper Series, with the aim of spreading and increasing the value of the works produced within the Foundation. The first Working Papers will soon be available on-line on the Foundation website.
On April 12th, among the initiatives for the European Year of Volunteering, the conference "The voice of the voluntary sector. Who represents the voluntary sector in the current systems of governance?", organized by VOLABO - Centre for Voluntary Service in the province of Bologna, was held in Bologna. On 19 April, the workshop "Italian Civil Society: Facing New Challenges" was held at the headquarters of Active citizenship in Rome. The meeting, attended by representatives of civic organizations, was an important opportunity for a joint reflection on the results of the second edition of the project on Civil Society Index, in which FONDACA participates as a scientific partner of Active citizenship.
