CIVIC ACTIVISM

The stereotype about active citizenship organizations - Civil Society Index Project. FONDACA is carrying out a case study on the stereotypical perception held by active citizenship organizations' stakeholders about their organization as part of the second edition of the Civil Society Index Project. The Foundation will use the information obtained during the two modules of its experimental course of introduction to active citizenship "Through the mirror" and from press reviews and monitoring of the mainstream media carried out during September 2010.

Measuring the value of a non profit organization. Following the information that emerged during the seminar on the accounting tools for a non profit organizations, carried out last June and attended by some representatives of the third sector and some experts on the management of both profit and non profit organizations, FONDACA is working to improve the potentiality of its instrument for the analysis of intangible assets. In this sense, a specific survey is ongoing on the European literature about the efficiency indicator of organizations.

 

GOVERNANCE

XXIV Convention of the Italian Society of Political Science. The Italian Society of Political Science held its annual XXIV convention from September 16th to 18th in Venice, organized in collaboration with the IUAV University. Participating in the panel regarding the contributions of intermediate groups for the quality of democracy, Giovanni Moro discussed his paper entitled Civic activism and active citizenship practices where particular focus was put on the distinctive elements, the anomalies, and all the unanswered questions regarding the active citizenship phenomenon. Lucia Mazzuca also presented , in this panel, a paper entitled Participative and deliberative democracy : some reflections on the Fung and Wright model which concentrated on a critical revision of both approaches considering the contribution of the Empowered Participatory Governance, a model elaborated in the U.S.A. by Archon Fung and Erik Wright.

Citizens in Europe. The role of citizenship in the European democratic experiment. The presentation of the book Citizens in Europe. The role of citizenship in the European democratic experiment written by Giovanni Moro took place on 29th October at the civic library "G. Tartarotti" in Rovereto. The presentation was carried out by the Municipality of Rovereto and by the Social Preparation School and Margherita Cogo, Sandra Dorigotti, Udalrico Fantelli, Gianmario Baldi together with Giovanni Moro took part in the event as speakers. CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP

The Future of Sustainability Reporting in the Food Sector. On 8th October in Milan, FONDACA and Barilla organized the event "The Future of Sustainability Reporting in the Food Sector". The seminar focused on the reporting practices in the food sector. Koen Boone, GRI lead consultant, presented the new Global Reporting Initiative Supplement on the "Food Processing Sector". The Italian translation of the Supplement has been made possible thanks to the support of the Barilla Group in collaboration with FONDACA. Sector managers, institutional members and scientific community representatives took part in the roundtables. They underlined the importance of both the transparent communication on the companies' outcomes on the societies in which they operate and the continuous dialogue with their stakeholders. The proceedings of the conference will shortly be available on the Foundation's website.

Survey on training opportunities in the field of corporate citizenship. In the coming weeks, FONDACA will conduct a "Survey on training opportunities in the field of corporate citizenship" as part of the redesigning of training activities for the year 2011. The aim is to highlight training needs and requirements in the field of corporate responsibility of Italian profit and no-profit organizations. The survey will involve a variety of public and private entities (businesses, CSOs, NGOs, local governments, and universities), starting from the ex-participants of the six editions of the Master in Corporate Citizenship. The meeting of the FONDACA founding members took place on October 6th in Rome at the Foundation's office. On that occasion the new composition of the board of directors has been defined for the next 4 years and the president Giovanni Moro and the director Alessia Sabbatino have been confirmed in office. The Foundation welcomes new members of the board of directors Giuseppe Scaramuzza and Marco Frey.

On the 9th and 10th of November the final conference of the PRIN project entitled "Political representation of united Europe" will be held at the University of Milan "Bicocca". On that occasion FONDACA will discuss the recently concluded research about the presence and role of immigrants within Italian civil society organizations. Download the programme of the event

The workshop on "The Other Side of the Coin. The Single Currency and European Citizenship" organized by FONDACA, by the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and by the Research College "The Transformative Power of Europe", took place on 11th October at the Free University of Berlin. The workshop follows up on a previous seminar held in 2009 at the Pisa Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies focused on the role of the single currency in influencing the construction of a Union citizenship.

The International Seminar entitled "For a more authoritative, assertive, representative Third Sector forum" organized by AUSER, CNCA and MOVI took place on 1st October. The seminar focused on the issue of the Governance of the third sector forum. Giovanni Moro, FONDACA's president, took part in the seminar.
